For the difference in paychecks, RDJ and other leading men continue to receive the most money in comparison to women because of the roles they take on. The biggest gender bias from this stat comes from the context of why men receive bigger paychecks than women. More than 75% of those men listed above get their millions from action and superhero movies like Iron Man, X-Men/ Wolverine Origins, Taken, The Other Guys, etc. (Though Mark Wahlberg may be an exception to this argument because he is the producer of several successful shows aside from being an actor). And the ability for men to dominate in the action/ superhero genre is detrimental to the financial advantage that women in film could also be enjoying. Women in the action/ superhero genre are often depicted as accessories or token characters. The idea that a woman action star who is not merely a girlfriend/ love interest/ or eye candy is so rare. And most actresses do not get the chance to be the lead in a superhero &/ action film because the dudes at the top are fearful that they may lose millions from a film led by a woman because many have since tanked at the box office. Recently, The Hunger Games has provided the successful example that women can be strong and lead an action film. But this is only one of a few films. Too, action/ superhero films are nearly always directed by men. There are sooooo few action/ superhero female movie directors. Lexi Alexander who directed Punisher: War Zone in 2008 is one of the only female directors of a superhero movie. I have so much more to say but i’ll leave it here.
